Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is the latest D&D 5E Starter Set adventure—the successor of the iconic Lost Mines of Phandelver campaign—crafted to introduce new DMs and players to the world of tabletop roleplaying. This adventure, though short and relatively simple, is filled to the brim with an exciting and self-contained storyline, intriguing locations, as well as a host of memorable encounters and NPCs.
Set on the mysterious Stormwreck Isle, the adventure will lead players through dense forests, hidden coves, ancient ruins, and—finally—an exciting boss fight in the form of a rogue dragon. As the players journey through these diverse locales, they’ll have the chance to tackle encounters through combat, roleplay, and other unconventional problem-solving skills.
While the adventure is richly detailed for its purpose, some areas described in the book don’t have accompanying maps. That’s where we come in! This article aims to provide DMs—new and old—with supplementary maps to fill in those gaps so that every bit of your adventure is vividly brought to life.
Before we dive into our top map pics, a warning to players: spoilers abound! If you’re planning on playing this campaign, do yourself (and your party) a favor and send this article to your DM instead!
Prologue: Voyage To Stormwreck Isles
1. Haunted Ghost Ship Interior — Undamaged
The “Undamaged” variant of the “Haunted Ghost Ship Interior” map provides DMs with a pristine version of a fluyt ship, featuring three fully furnished decks, as well as a separate captain’s room.
This ship is perfectly suited for the prologue of the adventure: “Voyage to Stormwreck Isle”, where the party can get to know each other as they sail to the location of the adventure. As the party nears their destination, they’ll encounter a merrow demanding tribute for their goddess—likely culminating in a combat scenario.
Having a detailed map for encounters like these can help players and DMs alike picture the fight better, as well as position themselves more strategically. Plus, this ship provides a cozy, visual setting for the party to make their first impressions on each other, which can be especially beneficial for new players.
2. Open Ocean Map Pack
This “Open Ocean” map pack is an extensive collection featuring a whopping 84 unique ocean scenarios, which can be perfect for enhancing your party’s journey to Stormwreck Isle.
From encounters with merfolk to shipwrecks full of loot and mystery to foggy, monster-infested waters, these maps provide endless possibilities for small, engaging encounters—ideal for introducing random encounters that could spice up the voyage and help players get situated in their party dynamic.
Chapter 1: Dragon’s Rest
3. Harpy Cove — Golden Sand
The “Golden Sands” variant of this “Harpy Cove” map paints the picture of a stunning scenic coast featuring treacherous rocky crags and a stretch of golden sand leading up to a beach.
This map is perfect for setting the stage for the initial “Drowned Sailors” encounter by giving your players a visually captivating backdrop as they make their landing and are promptly forced to wrangle with the local undead.
This beautiful cove of serene beauty and hidden dangers will not only set the tone for the adventure, but also give your players a memorable first impression of the island they’ll come to know as home for the duration of the adventure.
4. Antlion Canyon — Grassland
Originally an arid, desert map full of antlion nests, the “Grassland” variant of this “Antlion Canyon” map transforms the landscape into a stunning meadow with pools of water and lush grass. This beautiful variant map is absolutely perfect for the “Hotspring Havoc” random encounter.
In this encounter, the characters come across a hot spring surrounded by vivid mushrooms—conveniently represented on the map by bright patches of flowers. As they approach, they may inadvertently provoke the fume drakes, who become hostile if the party disturbs the mushrooms or enters the water. After the fight, the party may realize that the springs allow characters to regain hit points by bathing in its water.
Having a gorgeous map like this won’t just enhance the visual experience of the combat but also provide a pleasant setting for a frequent and beneficial stop that your party will most likely visit repeatedly during their adventure.
5. Celestial Chapel — Natural
This “Celestial Chapel — Natural” variant transforms the original map—which features a gorgeous chapel rich with plot hooks for a mysterious curse—into a stunning forest clearing with a river running through it. This natural setting, with its lush forest and serene river, is perfect for several random encounters of the adventure.
In the “There, There, Owlbear” encounter, the players come across a runaway owlbear that was part of a performing troupe whose ship crashed on the island. The party can fight off the creature or placate it with creative options. On the other hand, the “Kobold Renegades” encounter involves a group of kobolds who have turned against the island’s cloister and have now gone rogue.
Both of these encounters are designed to occur when the party travels inland rather than along the coast, making this natural clearing a perfect fit for enriching your adventure’s encounters.
Chapter 2: Seagrow Caves
5. Blacksmith Grotto
This “Blacksmith Grotto” map features a subterranean hideaway adorned with lush natural plant life, fascinating glowing ore, serene pools and mysterious statues, making it a great location with a unique atmosphere and lots of creative potential.
This map can serve as an excellent supplement for Chapter 2 of the adventure, where the party is tasked with delving into the caves of the island to communicate with the myconids on behalf of Tarak, a member of the cloister. As the party ventures deeper into the caves, they’ll need to help the myconids deal with threats such as noxious fumes.
Though not directly related to the storyline, this grotto can be a fantastic addition to this part of the adventure if your players enjoyed the dungeon-delving aspect of the game!
6. Mushroom-Infested Mines
Where the last map is a good supplement to the second chapter of the book, this “Mushroom-Infested Mines” map is the perfect addition to the myconid storyline. This stunning mine is brimming with bioluminescent fungi, and a sinkhole in the mine provides a glimpse into a sprawling myconid city.
This map gives DMs the potential to expand the adventure into the Underdark or better flesh out the myconid grove of the story with a picturesque setting that immerses the players in the atmospheric, enchanting fungal environment of the myconids.
Chapter 3: Cursed Shipwreck
7. Haunted Ghost Ship Exterior
This “Haunted Ghost Ship — Exterior” map is a fantastic supplement for Chapter 3, which revolves around the cursed shipwreck of the Compass Rose. As the players explore, they’ll encounter various creatures such as harpies, zombies, and the cursed talisman responsible for the curse itself.
The detailed depiction of the wrecked hull, bone-strewn rocks and treacherous shoals, as well as the variety of eerie shipwreck variants, will be sure to bring this haunting location to life as your players delve deep into the ruins of the ship.
8. Abyssal Fall
This “Abyssal Fall” map paints a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into the eerie scene of the deep ocean. The map pack includes two zones, each depicting a landscape rife with a horrifying history.
With variants including horrors such as enormous bones, gaping chasms, the remains of other sunken ships, and even a massive underwater behemoth, this map is perfect for expanding on the aquatic adventures of Chapter 3—adding secondary bosses and adventure hooks that can plunge your party right into the rich, dangerous world beneath the waves.
Chapter 4: Clifftop Observatory
9. Mountaintop Observatory
This “Mountaintop Observatory” map is a breathtaking depiction of a mountain peak crowned with an intricate observatory. Perched atop a series of basalt spires located at the southeastern tip of Stormwreck Isles, this observatory towers over the clouds and provides an awe-inspiring backdrop for the culmination of the adventure.
In the final chapter of the adventure, the party scales the mountain to rescue a bronze dragon from a grim fate at the hands of a malicious blue dragon. This map is almost custom-made for the encounter, setting a dramatic and visually gorgeous scene for the climactic showdown of the story.
10. Mountaintop Altar
Finally, this “Mountaintop Altar” map features a sacred altar perched high above the clouds on a cliff, towering over a landscape of crags and jagged rocks. Though not directly related to the storyline of Stormwreck Isles, this location is a visually stunning and versatile area that can easily be integrated into the adventure.
Given the significant role of the monastery and the mountainous terrain in the adventure, this majestic altar can be seamlessly woven into the narrative, whether as the site of sacrifice, or a sacred spot associated with an NPC at the monastery, offering new plot hooks and side quests involving performing a ritual or uncovering dark, ancient secrets.
